We have some unfortunate project updates specifically as it affects the Birch Road Culvert Replacement Project and the O’Keefe Street bridge project.

Due to the COVID-19 health crisis, as it relates to road funding, the road commission relies on gas taxes, registrations and licensing fees to fund cash flow and projects. We are projecting a considerable decrease in funding as we move further through this pandemic. Obviously this is something that we cannot control as COVID-19 is beginning its economic trickle down effects; less people are driving, less money is spent on gas and the state has extended the time frame for registrations and licensing fees. Gasoline is also at an all-time low throughout the state.

As a result, these two projects are affected by revenue reductions. The Birch Road Culvert Replacement Project requires a 50/50 match with Porter Township. They have graciously allowed us to postpone the project and are working with us through this process.

In addition, the O’Keefe Street Bridge project has been delayed and will be built in 2021 or 2022, depending on what gives us the most flexibility while still preserving the federal money for the project. As we move forward we will have more answers on these projects and when they can be scheduled.

I hope this is helpful to our residents as we explain how this is impacting projects during this health crisis.
